How To Replace Brake Lines and Hoses

Brake failure is a serious problem that can cause a vehicle to go out of control and damage people, animals and property. To avoid brake failure, requires brake liners to meet several guidelines.

Failing to meet these requirements will cause a vehicle to fail inspection. Guidelines may vary from state to state, so you should check with your own DMV to see the specific regulations in your area.

Width Requirements
According to DMV regulations, brake lining should measure at least 1/16 of an inch on bonded linings and 1/32 of an inch on riveted linings. No lining should be absent anywhere on the brake.

Condition Requirements
To pass motor vehicle inspections, brake lining must be securely fastened, and can't be broken or loose. With bonded linings, circumferential cracks are acceptable as long as the lining is still secure.

Cleanliness Requirements
Vehicles may fail inspection if brake liners are heavily soiled with foreign material, such as grease, which could impede the functionality of the brakes.
